The CMVM reinforced the information it makes available on its website on Sustainable Finance, seeking to satisfy the growing demand and need for information on integrating environmental, social and corporate governance factors in financial decisions.
In view of the number of national and international initiatives and the rapid evolution that is taking place in the national and European legal and regulatory framework, the structured and timely availability of information by the CMVM aims to contribute to the investor protection and the development of the national market.
In the new area of Sustainability, information can be found on the initiatives promoted by the CMVM to encourage public debate – conferences, public meetings, public consultations – on the initiatives of international organisations in this subject matter, on national and European legislative developments that have an impact on the activity of our supervisees and investors, clarifying the main changes and the timetable for the entry into force of dossiers such as: the shareholders rights directive; disclosure duties for non-financial information; benchmarks and financial sector disclosure duties; taxonomy; and amendments to the directives on the markets for financial instruments, alternative investments and collective investment undertakings.
The renewal of the CMVM website is part of the initiatives of the CMVM 2020 Sustainability Meetings, which during the morning brought together representatives from issuing companies and asset management companies, representative associations and specialists to discuss the challenges to the development of Sustainable Finance in Portugal including, among other aspects, the standardisation of information on sustainability to be provided to investors, the quality of the same information and the supervisory practices on the integration of sustainability factors.
This afternoon, starting at 17h30 and open to the public, the event “CMVM Talks” will be held in digital format, a moment that brings together specialists in the environmental area, namely in marine conservation, to discuss the topic “From Sustainable Finance to a Sustainable Planet”.
At the beginning of the session, the “A Microplastic Sea” project will be presented by the Association for the Study and Conservation of the Oceans (AECO), which was co-financed by the participants at the 2019 CMVM annual conference and that provided support for an environmental ocean sustainability initiative, integrating waste collection on the south coast of the Iberian peninsula, aimed at monitoring the spread of marine waste in this region, focusing particularly on microplastics; contribute to conservation through offshore cleaning actions; and sensitise the population to the threat microplastics poses to the survival of the marine ecosystem.
Within the scope of this project supported by the CMVM, two awareness-raising actions were carried out in schools in the Algarve region, involving 54 youngsters; three coastal cleaning actions between September and November, with the participation of 44 volunteers, mostly linked to the Association for the Protection of Girls and the Family; offshore cleaning actions involving 26 volunteers, including youngsters from the fishing community on the Culatra island; microplastics sampling and training sessions. The project report can be found on the association’s website.
