Following numerous reports from investors, the AMF is warning the public against proposals to invest in whisky. Several platforms inviting French investors to subscribe online to these investments have already been added to the AMF’s blacklist of unregistered offers.
To date, no whisky investment offer has obtained the mandatory pre-marketing registration from the regulator.
The AMF recommends that investors do not take up these solicitations from persons inciting them to invest in whisky and do not communicate them to third parties, in any form whatsoever.
As of 19 March 2020, the AMF had already placed 12 platforms proposing to investors to invest in whisky on the blacklist. They are :
In the context of the current financial markets turmoil, the AMF calls on retail investors to further increase their vigilance regarding investment proposals by phone or on the Internet, presented as safe havens.
Generally speaking, the AMF reminds investors and individuals to follow these safety guidelines before making any investment:
- no advertising materials should make you overlook the fact that high returns always involve high risk;
- learn as much as you can about the company or intermediary trying to sell you a product (authorization/certification, company history, location of head offices, etc.);
- only invest in a product you understand;
- ask yourself how, and by whom, the purchase price or selling price of the advertised product is set, and find out the precise terms and timeline for selling the product, especially in cases where the product invests in an asset class with low liquidity.
